He became Chamberlain and Marshal to Emperor Nicholas I and was Head of the Anichkov Palace under the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna who described him as being a man with exquisite manners of the old Versailles Court, polite even in jokes, the only drawback of which was excessive touchiness. Pushkin ridiculed him in the image of an angry master in the novel Eugene Onegin. They had four daughters, all of whom were described as being very sweet and well loved in Society.
He died in May 1833 in St Petersburg, whilst towards the end of his wife's life, living almost entirely in Paris, she was buried in the Sergius Cemetery in Strelna. Sofia Gavrilovna (18041884), was Maid of Honour to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and married Prince Valentin Mikhailovich Shakhovsky.
