Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel beautiful, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time. He was born in Paris but naturalised Russian by Emperor Paul I. He married Princess Elisabeth Saltykov in 1796 and they moved to Russia during the French Revolution.

He became Chamberlain and Marshal to Emperor Nicholas I and was Head of the Anichkov Palace under the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna who described him as being a man with exquisite manners of the old Versailles Court, polite even in jokes, the only drawback of which was excessive touchiness. Pushkin ridiculed him in the image of an angry master in the novel Eugene Onegin. They had four daughters, all of whom were described as being very sweet and well loved in Society.

He died in May 1833 in St Petersburg, whilst towards the end of his wife's life, living almost entirely in Paris, she was buried in the Sergius Cemetery in Strelna. Sofia Gavrilovna (18041884), was Maid of Honour to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and married Prince Valentin Mikhailovich Shakhovsky.

Maria Gavrilovna (18151893), married General Joseph Frantsevich Dainese (18021873). Provenance: An aristocratic French family. Size: 9.5 x 3 cm approx.
