Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel beautiful, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time. On 25th May 1896 in the Hall of the Moscow City Duma, the Mayor of Moscow, a prominent Moscovite philanthropist K. It was attended by 232 of the elite in Moscow business and philanthropy with a toast and speech given by V. The menus consist of two parts one for dinner and one for music. The Dinner Menu is exraordinarily beautiful with the date "25 MAY 1896" emblazened in gold in Cyrillic. Both are also copied in French on the reverse, presumably in case one could not understand the script due to the lettering being based on traditional Russian medieval calligraphy but also for those who spoke French better than Russian.

These menus are fine masterpieces of graphic arts, produced in the technique of chromolithography by Russia's leading printing enterprises. Among the artists who made drawings for the menus were many prominent artists of the day.

Both are lavishly printed in gold and other striking colours in the Pan Slavic style with St George slaying the Dragon representing the sacred position Moscow has in the Coronation, with the Kremlin in the background surmounted by the Crown of Monomakh. The Dinner Menu and Dance Programme are discussed with a photograph of the Dinner Menu on page 61 of E. Falaleeva'Russian State Dining', printed in Moscow in 2003 from the collection held in the Russian State Historical Museum. The artist of the Dinner Menu and the Music Programme was F. Shektel and was printed by I.
